On March 4, the St. Patrick-St. Vincent (SPSV) Bruins took the court against Burbank High in a high-stakes, high-intensity matchup for Round 1 of the CIF State Championship. The Bruins delivered a statement win on their home court, showcasing elite chemistry, aggressive defense, and unstoppable offensive execution.
A Battle of Pace and Precision
From the opening tip, both teams played with urgency, but it was SPSV that dictated the game’s tempo. The Bruins moved the ball with purpose, finding open looks from beyond the arc and dominating the paint with strong finishes at the rim. Meanwhile, Burbank struggled with ball security, turning the ball over under the Bruins’ relentless pressure.
The Return of Deuce Walker

One of the biggest stories of the night was the return of Deuce Walker, who made his long-awaited comeback from an ACL and meniscus injury. Coming off the bench, Walker provided an instant spark, reminding everyone why he’s such a vital piece of the Bruins’ rotation. His energy and presence on the floor further elevated an already locked-in SPSV squad.
After the game, I caught up with Deuce Walker to talk about his return and what this win meant to him.
Interview with Deuce Walker
Mental Strength: How did you stay motivated during your recovery, knowing you had one last season ahead of you? Deuce Walker: "I stayed motivated during my recovery because I was unsatisfied with how my last season ended. That really kept me pushing. Also, not having any championships to show for my high school career made me even hungrier to get back on the court."
Return to the Court: What was your first game back like? Did you feel like yourself right away, or did it take time to regain confidence?
Deuce Walker: "My first game back felt surreal—like I was in a dream. It definitely took some time to regain confidence after not playing for a year, especially being thrown into a win-or-go-home situation."
Championship Run: After everything you’ve been through, what did it mean to you personally to win NCS this year? Does your journey feel complete yet, or do you still have something to prove in the upcoming rounds?
Deuce Walker: "Winning the NCS championship meant so much to me after everything I’ve been through this past year. It felt like all my hard work finally paid off. But my journey isn’t over yet—we still have more work to do, and we’re locked in for a state championship run.
Christian Trusclair: The Floor General
If there was one player who embodied leadership, poise, and control, it was Christian Trusclair(CT). From facilitating the offense to playing lockdown defense, CT’s presence on the court was undeniable.
CT’s ability to read the game and make smart plays kept the Bruins’ offense flowing. Whether it was finding open teammates, controlling the tempo, or stepping up to hit big shots, he did it all. His basketball IQ and composure under pressure made him the glue that held the team together.

Even when Burbank tried to apply pressure, CT remained calm, directing the Bruins’ attack and keeping them in complete control of the game. His leadership was instrumental in securing this win and setting the tone for the rest of the championship run.
Seniors Who Kept the Season Alive
This season wouldn’t have been possible without the leadership and resilience of SPSV’s senior core. Players like Isaiah Wilson, Terry Finn, and Ronald Rhymes stepped up when the team needed them most.

Last but not least sophomore Ronald Rhymes, in particular, was a crucial force, bringing energy on both ends of the floor and setting the tone with his defensive intensity. His ability to make game-changing plays in critical moments proved invaluable, and his leadership helped keep the team motivated through the ups and downs of the season.
From knocking down clutch shots to facilitating key plays, the seniors made sure this team stayed focused and driven. Their experience and dedication have been the backbone of SPSV’s success, ensuring the next generation of Bruins continues this winning culture.
A Statement Win Moving Forward
This game was more than just a first-round victory—it was a testament to the Bruins’ chemistry, preparation, and championship mindset. While Burbank fought hard, they ultimately couldn’t withstand SPSV’s relentless attack. Although they were not successful when playing Santa Cruz this Thursday in round 2, the Bruins showed amazing grit and leadership this season and should be more than proud of themselves for how far they came.
